Being a Hybrid: How to Use Indie-Pubbing, Plus Traditional or E-first Publishers to Build a Career 50 Jennifer Ashley

Click for details

Publishing is in a state of flux: Traditionally published authors are also publishing indie books; indie authors are signing contracts with traditional publishers while continuing to indie publish; small press authors are branching out into indie as well.

This workshop will discuss the pros and cons of each type of publishing path, and how to pursue multiple paths without compromising or going crazy. No longer do authors have to choose only one road to a successful career–opportunities exist to mix many styles of publishing to grow a career that benefits the author.

Jennifer Ashley is an experienced hybrid author writing for a large traditional publisher as well as indie-pubbing; she also has juggled e-first and traditional careers.

STEP 1 (Stock Images): Selecting, Cleaning, Editing & Cropping – Which, What, Why & Where 50 Jimmy Thomas

Click for details

Your cover needs to inflict emotions to your potential readers, and your cover image(s) will determine whether this happens or not. Learn how to select the best cover image(s), what makes them great, good, ok or bad, what should be cleaned and edited and why, and the strong importance of image cropping.

Discover the real reasons for headless covers, learn all about image copyrights, who actually has the rights to sell you their images, what you can and cannot do with them, to how to properly combine images together, avoiding the super-imposed amateur look, and the most common faux pas that give, and leave, bad impressions.

Jimmy’s success with his RNC businesses is due to the “emotional response/reaction” his work inflicts on the consumer.

“It’s all about the visual and emotional stimulation that your service or product gives.”

STEP 2 (Product Packaging): Judging a Book by its Cover and Why 50 Jimmy Thomas

Click for details

Learn how your novel cover (product packaging) helps or hurts your reputation and novel sales, from the selection of your cover image, to knowing, and understanding, the primary focus points of the creation of your cover, as well as the importance of colors, fonts and text size, choosing digital-and-print or digital-or-print, and understanding what/who is responsible for, and directing, your novel sales.

Whether you are a professional cover artist, an aspiring or amateur cover artist, or neither, understanding why your cover is so important to your sales, reputation, career and success, to knowing and understanding what makes a cover shine over others, how the subconscious mind plays the biggest role in, not decision-making, but grabbing your attention, this class will teach you things you never even thought of, considered or knew.

Jimmy’s success with his RNC businesses is due to the quality level of his “product packaging”.

“It’s not about having consumers go to you for your service or product, it’s about giving them confident reason to go to you over any other.”
– Jimmy Thomas.

• Create all her bestselling self-pubbed covers, plus dozens more for other authors.

• Mentor dozens of writers in various stages of their careers, focusing on increasing the marketability of their work and gaining a readership.
• Found a reader-centric Facebook Page and book club group, Red Hot Readers, that matches authors up with their three thousand interested readers.
• Build an extensive reader base, which includes 1500 readers on her private email list, 19k+ followers on Facebook, and 300+ member street team.
• Publish with a non-NY press and achieve NYT bestseller status with the first book in her contemporary erotic romance series, Walk on the Wild Side.

Plotting for Pantsers 50 Lynn Lorenz

Click for details

Most pantsers think plotting = death. They prefer to just write, to dive into their story, and go with the flow. But sometimes the flow dries up, strands you in the mirky middle, or takes you somewhere you didn’t want to go. With Front-end Loading, from brainstorming to writing The End, you can keep the loosey-goosey of pantserness but still reap the benefits of plodding plotting.

Using several techniques and easy forms, you can front-end load your next manuscript from conception to completion, easily and without killing your creativity, to create a well-rounded story and characters that come together and make sense.

An Introduction to Ebook Self Publishing: How to Publish, Distribute and Sell Your eBook 50 Mark Coker

Click for details

The ebook revolution has taken the publishing industry by storm, and self-published romance authors are leading the revolution and now grace the New York Times bestseller list on a regular basis, while just one year ago this was almost unheard of. In the future, it’ll become even more commonplace as it’s easier to self-publish an ebook than you might think.

In this introductory primer to ebook self-publishing, Mark Coker will cover the basics, all without unnecessary technical jargon. Mark’s session will begin by providing an overview of the latest ebook market trends, then provide detailed guidance on ebook creation, pricing, distribution and marketing. Learn about ISBNs, copyright and why you shouldn’t worry about piracy.

Attendees will leave this workshop empowered with the foundational knowledge needed to maximize their success as an ebook author. This foundational session is ideal for both aspiring authors who have yet to choose a publishing path, as well as traditionally published authors who are about to make the leap to ebook self-publishing.

Money, Money, Money: Facts & Figures for Financial Payoff 50 Mark Coker

Click for details

From analyzing over $12 million in sales for a collection of 120,000 Smashwords ebooks from May 1, 2012 through March 31, 2013. We aggregated our sales data from across our retail distribution network, which includes the Apple iBookstore, Barnes & Noble, Sony, Kobo and Amazon (only about 200 of our 200,000 titles are at Amazon). As the world’s largest indie ebook distributor, I think our study represents the most comprehensive analysis ever of how ebooks from self-published authors and small independent presses are behaving in the marketplace.

This survey attempts to identify Viral Catalysts by analyzing the common characteristics of bestselling (and poor-selling) Smashwords ebooks. We posed a series of questions to our data – including several new ones – to reveal answers that might help authors reach more readers.

Do frequent price changes help authors sell more books?
Do longer or shorter book titles sell more books?
Do longer or shorter book descriptions sell more books?
How do sales develop over time at a retailer, and what factors might spark a breakout?
Do longer or shorter books sell better?
What’s the average word count for the 60 bestselling Smashwords romance books?
What does the sales distribution curve look like, and how many books sell well?
How many words are the bestselling authors selling for a penny?
What are the most common price points for indie ebooks, and what changed since last year?
How many more downloads do FREE ebooks get compared to priced ebooks?
How have Smashwords sales grown at the Apple iBookstore in three years?
How does price impact unit sales volume?
What price points yield the greatest overall earnings for authors and publishers?
What does the Yield Graph portend for the future of publishing?

Copyright, Piracy, & DRM: Protecting Your Work in the Digital Age 50 Kathryn Loch

Click for details

Issues regarding copyright, piracy, and protecting an author’s intellectual property are nothing new. But the digital age and using the internet as a source of commerce has made every author vulnerable to piracy. What laws apply to eBooks or digital content? What is DRM? What is DMCA?

Many will be surprised to learn that what they thought they knew was all wrong. All of this, I encountered when I discovered my work pirated on the internet. We will discuss my investigation of the ”darknet” and the global attitudes regarding intellectual property. A new century with ever-changing technology within a global market demands authors and publishers adapt.

What I Learned About Writing From Nearly Dying 50 Maureen O. Betita

Click for details

You can learn a lot from nearly dying, especially about fear and how it can hold you back. Although, once the worst has happened, that’s when second chances appear… and third, or fourth; however many it takes. Let me inspire you with my story of going from Sudden Cardiac Death and ten days in a hospital, to attending my first romance convention a year later, pitching a year later, to an agent a year later and signing my first book that next year.

At eight books now, I’m still writing, still publishing and still believe in facing the fear and laughing in its general direction. It is possible; I’m proof. My story will inspire you to see past the roadblocks and hold onto the fun of writing. You can survive rejection, criticism and not knowing how to do everything perfectly from the very beginning. We all start somewhere, I started at death’s door.

Paint the Picture – How to Tell if You’re Showing 50 Stephanie Taylor

Artists use a paint brush to show a story. Writers use words. Like an artist, do you use a brush to paint your picture or just show someone your final masterpiece? Do you want to learn how to paint with the keys of your keyboard so that your audience is feeling every stroke, every emotion, and every sense you wish for them to feel?

Telling is the number one problem Astraea Press owner and editor, Stephanie Taylor, sees in the submissions that come across her desk. It’s her goal to help every author figure out exactly what showing means, recognize warning words, and how to stop telling. Join her for a hands-on workshop and personal guidance on how to beat the industry plague that so many have fallen prey to.

Novel Creation Appreciation for Readers: “Dragon’s Heart” 50 LaVerne Thompson, Jimmy Thomas, Bruce Heinsius and Fiona Jayde Media

Click for details

Often overlooked or considered is the depth gone into a great novel cover. Let us enlighten, bedazzle, surprise and outright shock you, while we each detail our roles in the creation of the custom made cover of LaVerne Thompson’s “Dragon’s Heart”…

LaVerne will discuss her writing and inspiration of her characters, to the direction she wanted to go with for her novel cover, and choosing the process of hiring RNC’s own Jimmy Thomas, to get her cover-vision brought to life.

Jimmy will then detail all the aspects of his custom cover shoot, from his full thought-process and how he translated the vision given to him into a live-form, to working with his Photographer, Bruce Heinsius, as they work together to get just the right feeling, emotion and look needed to pull-off an amazing cover image that will bring her character and novel to life.

With decades of professional photography experience, Bruce will describe how those feelings, emotions, and that right look is made with lighting, lighting and more lighting. From key light, hair light, rim light and back light, to reflectors, bounce cards, umbrellas and snoots, learn that it is not just about a subject to shoot and a camera to shoot it with, but rather the attitude, the three-dimensional projection, and the surreal life-like capture that all the shadows and lighting create, that dramatically enhance those feelings, emotions and needed look.

As the production shifts back to Jimmy, he will take you for a ride into his head, as he goes through the hundreds of images taken, to pinpoint the best of the best, and what makes them better than the others, then see through his experienced eyes what he sees as for what to clean, edit and where to crop, which concludes with the final image, for cover artist Fiona Jayde to work her incredible magic on.

Being hand-selected, highly-suggested, and referred to LaVerne by Jimmy, as he knows her style and what genre covers she really shines in, Fiona is now the director of Laverne’s movie put into the form of a novel. Once Fiona was given descriptions and details by Laverne, she combined just the right colors, cover art, additional features and just the right font, to send it to Jimmy for his keen eye-for-detail, followed by a response from Jimmy of “It just blew me away!” With only two small adjustments to meet Jimmy’s perfectionist quality-check, off to LaVerne it went.

Hear for yourself what LaVerne thought of her new cover, in this “Novel Cover Creation Appreciation for Readers” presentation.

Self Defense Is Easier Than You Think 50 Jimmy Thomas & Fiona Jayde

Click for details

At any age, the fear of being beaten-up, attacked, mugged, stabbed or shot, follows just about every untrained person. We aren’t Jason Bourne or Natasha Romanoff, therefore simple, yet very effective, defensive techniques are needed to be known.

Whether someone is grabbing a fistful of your shirt to control you, has you in a headlock, is kicking you while you’re on the ground, has a gun to your stomach or head, is striking you with a club, or even has a knife blade right against your throat while standing securely behind you, Jimmy will show you defenses against common hand and foot strikes, as well as club, knife and gun attacks.

Learn defenses from situations you would think are impossible to defend or escape from, that almost any size or strength adult can perform, as it’s not about strength… it’s about technique.
