CLASS 36: Rewriting and Editing Your Novel (Courage Knight) {ROOM: LAUGHLIN}

You’ve written a book! Do you think you’re done? Sit back for a moment pat yourself on the back. You’ve achieved what most would-be writers only ever dream of doing. But don’t get too comfortable – the real work is just beginning. After you take a short break, you need to come back to your book and give it a hard look. How did the plot shape up? Do you have good tension, conflict, and resolution? What can you do to make it even better? How are your characters developed? Are their motivations strong enough to propel the plot to the final climax? Are there scenes that seem to bog down, that could be rewritten to make your story even stronger?

After you’ve tweaked the plot as much as you possibly can, then it’s time to look over the mechanics. How many clichés appear on your pages? What about overused words or expressions? What about passive phrases – are they really wrong? Is your punctuation correct? What inaccuracies, bungles or bloopers have you committed, that an editor would look for? If you’re self-publishing, then go the extra step and learn to do self-editing. Your finished novel will have a more professional look than much of what gets published online. If you’re going to send your book to a publisher, any revisions and editing you do yourself will give your book a professional stamp that will set you ahead of the competition.
