Jimmy’s success with his RNC businesses has been due to his sense for branding.

Product Packaging: Judging the Inside by the Outside

Learn how your novel cover (product packaging) helps or hurts your reputation and novel sales, from the selection of your cover image, to knowing, and understanding, the primary focus points of the creation of your cover, as well as the importance of colors, fonts and text size, choosing digital-and-print or digital-or-print, and understanding what/who is responsible for, and directing, your novel sales. Whether you are a professional cover artist, an aspiring or amateur cover artist, or neither, understanding why your cover is so important to your sales, reputation, career and success, to knowing and understanding what makes a cover shine over others, how the subconscious mind plays the biggest role in, not decision-making, but grabbing your attention, this class will teach you things you never even thought of, considered or knew. Jimmy’s success with his RNC businesses is due to the quality level of his “product packaging”.

“It’s not about having consumers go to you for your service or product, it’s giving them reason to go to you over any other.” – Jimmy Thomas

Your cover needs to inflict emotions to your potential readers, and your cover image(s) will determine whether this happens or not. Learn how to select the best cover image(s), what makes them great, good, ok or bad, what should be cleaned and edited and why, and the strong importance of image cropping. Discover the real reasons for headless covers, learn all about image copyrights, who actually has the rights to sell you their images, what you can and cannot do with them, to how to properly combine images together, avoiding the super-imposed amateur look, and the most common faux pas that give, and leave, bad impressions. Jimmy’s success with his RNC businesses is due to the “emotional response/reaction” his work inflicts on the consumer.

When it comes to swag there are a million different products out there, but what really works? Where is it best to spend your money? I will go through all the popular forms of swag writers can buy and let you know which are the best bang for your buck and which you should avoid. Swag is specifically to get people to buy and read your books, but not all swag is the same. Which swag do readers love? Which will draw people in and make them buy? Just like a book cover needs to be good enough for people to stop and pick it up, so too does the swag you giveaway.

Rewriting and Editing Your Novel

You’ve written a book! Do you think you’re done? Sit back for a moment pat yourself on the back. You’ve achieved what most would-be writers only ever dream of doing. But don’t get too comfortable – the real work is just beginning. After you take a short break, you need to come back to your book and give it a hard look. How did the plot shape up? Do you have good tension, conflict, and resolution? What can you do to make it even better? How are your characters developed? Are their motivations strong enough to propel the plot to the final climax? Are there scenes that seem to bog down, that could be rewritten to make your story even stronger? After you’ve tweaked the plot as much as you possibly can, then it’s time to look over the mechanics. How many clichés appear on your pages? What about overused words or expressions? What about passive phrases – are they really wrong? Is your punctuation correct? What inaccuracies, bungles or bloopers have you committed, that an editor would look for? If you’re self-publishing, then go the extra step and learn to do self-editing. Your finished novel will have a more professional look than much of what gets published online. If you’re going to send your book to a publisher, any revisions and editing you do yourself will give your book a professional stamp that will set you ahead of the competition.

Bio: Fiona Jayde is a space pilot, a ninth degree black belt in three styles of martial arts, a computer hacker, a mountain climber, a jazz singer, a master painter, a super-spy with a talent for languages, and an evil genius. All in her own head. In life, she tinkers with images to create cover art for amazing books, possesses a brown belt in Tae Kwon Do and blue belt in Aikido, a web developer who is scared to death of heights, loves jazz piano and can bench-press about 20 pounds — with effort. She learned English from reading Nora Roberts and watching Growing Pains, and when not plotting murder and mayhem, she loves fantasy, art a la Luis Royo and Boris Vallejo, and is fascinated and creeped out by H.R. Giger.

PANELS
Creating Customized Covers PANEL: RNC Show and Tell

“Back in 2013 while I sat in a class at RNC 2013 in Las Vegas I listened to Jimmy Thomas, Fiona Jayde, LaVerne Thompson and Bruce Heinsius talk about creating LaVerne’s cover. I sat, and all of a sudden had one of those moments that I was picturing a future cover from start-to-finish, that later became Redemption at Midnight.” – Mary Moriarty

Often overlooked or considered is the depth gone into a great novel cover. Let us enlighten, bedazzle, surprise and outright shock you, while we each detail our roles in the creation of the custom made covers of Mary Moriarty’s…

Mary will discuss her writing and inspiration of her characters, to the direction she wanted to go with for her novel covers, and choosing the process of hiring RNC’s own Jimmy Thomas to get her cover-vision brought to life.

Jimmy will detail all the aspects of his custom cover shoots, from his full thought-process and how he translated the vision given to him into a live-form, to working with his Photographer, Bruce Heinsius, as they work together to get just the right feeling, emotion and look needed to pull-off an amazing cover image that would bring her character and novel to life.

With decades of professional photography experience, Bruce will describe how those feelings, emotions, and that right look is made with lighting, lighting and more lighting. From key light, hair light, rim light and back light, to reflectors, bounce cards, umbrellas and snoots, learn that it’s not just about a subject to shoot and a camera to shoot it with, but rather the attitude, the three-dimensional projection, and the surreal life-like capture that all the shadows and lighting create, that dramatically enhance those feelings, emotions and needed look.

As the production shifts back to Jimmy, he will take you for a ride into his head, as he goes through the hundreds of images taken, to pinpoint the best of the best, and what makes them better than the others, then see through his experienced eyes what he sees as for what to clean, edit and where to crop, which concludes with the final image, for cover artist Fiona Jayde to work her incredible magic on.

The panel is then turned over to cover artist Fiona Jayde, who is then the director of Mary’s movie put into the form of a novel. Once Fiona was given descriptions and details by Mary, she combined just the right colors, cover art, additional features and just the right font, then off to Mary they go.
